How do I use the map?

Understanding the map view, pin types, venue previews, and how to navigate your personal food map.

πŸ’‘

Quick Answer: The map is your home screen on rec'd. It shows colour-coded pins for every place you and the people you follow have saved, and you can tap any pin to see details or save it yourself.

Overview

When you open rec'd, you land on the map. It's a full-screen view of your city, populated with pins representing saved venues. Every pin tells you something at a glance.

Pin types

Pins on the map are colour-coded by save status:

Pin colour
What it means
πŸ”΅ Blue pin (clock icon)
A place you've marked as "Want to Go"
πŸ’— Pink pin (thumbs up)
A place you've marked as "Liked"
🌸 Light pink pin (star)
A place you've marked as "rec'd"
πŸ‘Ž Grey pin (thumbs down)
A place you've marked as "Not a Fan"
πŸ‘€ Profile picture pin
A place saved by one or more people you follow (their avatar appears on the pin)

When multiple people you follow have saved the same place, you'll see stacked profile pictures on that pin.

Tapping a pin

Tap any pin on the map to open a venue preview at the bottom of the screen. This shows you the venue's name, category, price range, location, a thumbnail image, who in your network has saved it, a colour-coded breakdown of how people rated it, a "View venue" button to open the full venue card, and a "Save" button to quickly save it yourself.

When multiple venues are stacked on the same spot, you can swipe left and right through the preview cards to browse each one.

Zooming in

When you zoom into the map, venue name labels appear beneath the pins and neighbourhood names (e.g. London Fields, Shoreditch, Dalston) appear on the map to help you orient yourself.

The bottom bar

At the bottom of the map, you'll see three floating pill tabs that let you quickly filter what's on the map:

  • Save status: Filter by rec'd, Liked, Want to Go, or Not a Fan
  • People: Filter by specific friends and/or creators in your network
  • Cuisine: A cuisine filter to narrow the map by food type (e.g. Italian, Indian, Japanese)

These filters combine, so you can get very specific: for example, show only Thai restaurants that a specific friend has rec'd. The active filter state is always visible in the pills. A location arrow button (bottom right) re-centres the map on your current position.

When you apply filters, the bottom bar updates to reflect what you're viewing.

Navigation

The bottom navigation bar has three tabs: Explore, Map (you're here), and Profile.
